Many people have frustration with search engine optimization programs. The problem is that most search engine optimization companies provide a service that is highly technical and difficult to understand – without any way of measuring the results or effectiveness of the campaign.
The reason why SEO companies do not provide meaningful data is twofold:
- It requires a lot of expensive technology and servers to produce the results
- If they showed you the results you might hold them accountable for them
The first problem, the technology, is about providing meaningful reports to measure the results of a search engine optimization effort. To measure the effectiveness of an optimization campaign, you first need to know whether your site pages are placing well in the various search engines for your selected phrases. Good SEO companies will provide reports with this information weekly or monthly. Unfortunately, many also stop there.
The accountability problem is more troubling. If you talk to an SEO provider and they DON’T offer to send you these reports this should be a red flag. If they aren’t willing or able to show you whether or not their service actually works, any concerns you have are likely valid. What if it doesn’t provide the results you expect? How would you know? If you do know, what recourse do you have? These are good questions to which you deserve answers.
When these two problems are solved properly – the results can be exciting. Search engine ranking reports are interesting, but there is what is more important? How many visitors are coming to my site after searching for my phrases? How many sites are linking to my site? How much traffic is generated from these links? What is even more important? What are people doing when they get to my site? How many leads, Emails, sales, page views or calls are made from these visits?
You can know the answers to these questions. Some are provided by special software that queries all of the search engines and digs through all the results automatically. Others are provided by attaching specialized web analytics software to your site, like Net IQ’s WebTrends. Still others require specialized scripts that calculate how important your site is in the eyes of search engines like Google.
